What Is Operation Sindoor?
Operation Sindoor is a high-level strategic initiative involving coordinated defense preparedness and airspace security. As part of this operation, 20 key Indian airports will remain closed temporarily for a 48-hour window. While the exact purpose remains classified for national security reasons, the disruption is expected to significantly impact domestic and some international flights.
In the night of May 6 and 7, Indian forces started Operation Sindoor. They did this to fight back after 26 tourists were killed in Pahalgam. This action has led to some airports being closed for civilian flights.
So far, flights to 20 airports have been canceled. which include Srinagar, Jammu, Leh, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Shimla, Kullu, Dharamshala, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Bhuj, Kishangarh, Gwalior, Kandla, Adampur, Hindon, Bareilly and Jamnagar.
These airports are near the border or have military air routes. This keeps civilians safe. It also helps military planes move without being seen.
The airfields will be closed until May 10, 2025. This is because of a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen). Cirium, an aviation company, says over 500 flights will be affected. This is less than 8% of all domestic flights in India.
